Use a Plumb Line

Since most ceilings and floors are not absolutely straight, you must determine the true vertical line from ceiling to floor. Here’s how to do it:

• Choose an inconspicuous corner, such as behind a door, to start your project.
• From this starting point, measure the width of your wallcovering strip, minus _” and mark the wall at ceiling.
Plum line method: tack a piece of string at this mark just below ceiling. Tie plumb (any heavy weight) to the string just above floor line. When plumb stops swaying, lightly mark wall (at string) with pencil about 2” above baseboard. Remove plumb and rub string with any
colored chalk and hold taut against wall at baseboard.
Give the string a quick snap. Zap! The chalk will strike
the wall and this is you guide for positioning your first
wallcovering strip.
Level method: (Easier method) Use your 4’ level to
draw a light vertical line at the mark made on the wall
above.
• Make a plumb line on each new wall before hanging
strips.
